Sunlight-Starlight 2020

Help us share Sun Light and Star Light to families in need!

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me . . .” Matt 25:35-36

We all need some light in our lives during these trying times. Many in our community are facing severe challenges because of COVID-19, but it is especially difficult for children of incarcerated mothers, who are physically separated from their moms during formative times of their life.  That is why the Oahu Going Home Consortium-OGHC (which involves volunteers from parishes, non-profit organizations and government agencies) is helping bring sun light and star light to women in prison. Thanks to many of our donors and volunteers, the coalition has been instrumental in holding annual festive events to reunite keiki and caregivers with their moms in prison during special times of the year. However; recently the Women Community Correction Center-WCCC has cancelled all in-person visits until further notice.

This means the popular diocese-sponsored Christmas event “Star Light Star Bright”, which has been a major source of support for vulnerable families coping with incarceration for 20 years, along with the annual “Sun Light Sun Bright”, which brought much comfort and joy to families last summer, will not be able to happen as previously scheduled this year. That said, OGHC is committed to keeping families connected by organizing two sets of gift care-packages for children and caregivers from Kauai, Maui, Molokai, Oahu and Hawaii to go out in September and December.

Please donate to these healing efforts: “Sun Light Sun Bright in a Bag” and “Sending Love from Star Light Star Bright.  OGHC is also collecting support for at-home and in-school learning for children through gift cards to their caregivers. Please give what you can to share light to others. To help heal hurts through embodying the values of faith, hope and love, please visit the diocese website on prison ministry and reintegration, where donation links can also be found at the bottom of that page.

Mahalo and God Bless!
