CRS Rice Bowl Lent 2026 Week #2

Second Week of Lent Reflection: A Story of Hope & Harmony
In Walewale, Ghana, children living in poverty are finding hope and harmony through a partnership between Catholic Relief Services and the Sisters of Charity of St. Anne, who have created a welcoming community space at Our Lady of Rocio Clinic.
Mothers and caregivers gather regularly to share practical lessons on nutrition, early childhood education, emotional well-being, and family strengthening. Together, these sessions create a foundation of care, connection, and hope.
One nurse and mother, Georgina, has taken this work even further by training her neighbors in playful, interactive learning techniques. Through song, laughter, and rhythmic play, children begin to grasp counting, letters, and social skills in ways that are joyful, memorable, and deeply human.
This approach echoes a reflection shared by Pope Leo XIV during his Second Week of Lent retreat, when he spoke about the unique power of music in prayer and in life:
“Music … helps us in a way that words cannot, raising our spirit to the Lord.”
For young children, music and rhythm do much the same — lifting spirits, strengthening bonds, and supporting cognitive growth in ways words alone cannot achieve.
The Holy Father also urged the faithful to “conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Christ,” calling believers to live compassion and hope through concrete actions. At Our Lady of Rocio Clinic, caregivers embody this call each day by creating environments where children — regardless of circumstance — feel loved, safe, and ready to flourish.
“This program has helped us change our lives and our children,” Georgina shares, reminding us that simple acts of love, play, and music can carry the hope of the Gospel into a child’s earliest years.
