Magnifica Humanitas

In his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas (“The Greatness of Humanity”), His Holiness Pope Leo XIV shares an insightful message of hope: that even in an age of artificial intelligence and technology, we must focus on what makes us all beautifully human. According to the Vaticanʻs Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, the historic papal letter calls people of faith and goodwill to preserve human dignity, authentic relationships, meaningful work, and closeness with one another. Pope Leo warns that as artificial intelligence becomes more advanced, society must be careful not to let technology replace moral responsibility—especially in matters of war and human life. He contrasts a “culture of power” with a “civilization of love,” reminding us that peace begins with practicing compassion, seeking justice, and building bridges through dialogue and prayer.

At the heart of the Holy Father’s message is a reminder that while technology can be beneficial, it should never replace human connection.

“The civilization of love begins when we choose compassion over power.”

Our Holy Father encourages the world to ensure that technology brings people closer together rather than farther apart. He urges us to protect the dignity of human work and ensure that people are not treated as disposable in a rapidly changing economy. He calls on society to place the human person—not profit or efficiency—at the center of progress.

“In order to protect the human person in the age of artificial intelligence, I believe that today we must once again reflect on the common good.”

At the same time, the Pope offers a strong appeal for peace, warning against the use of artificial intelligence in warfare and systems of domination. He urges leaders to “disarm” AI from paths that could deepen violence and division. Using the biblical image of the Tower of Babel, Pope Leo cautions against a future driven by pride and power––instead inviting humanity to build deeper trust, solidarity, and communion with one another.

As Pope Leo shared during the presentation of the encyclical:

“Magnifica Humanitas was born from listening.”

In a world increasingly shaped by screens, algorithms, and rapid change, Magnifica Humanitas reminds us that the greatness of humanity is found in our ability to love, listen, accompany, and remain deeply connected to one another.
